Why exchange in North Cyprus?
Better value than back home
The Turkish Lira (TL) is the currency used in North Cyprus. Foreign currencies such as the British pound, US dollar and euro are easily exchanged. If you plan to visit North Cyprus, you will be much better off bringing cash banknotes or traveller's cheques and exchanging them over the counter at a convenient exchange office (or döviz bürosu, as the locals call it) in your local town.
You get better value for your Euros, British Pounds and US Dollars, as the rates are relatively more competitive than leading UK travel money providers, and there are no commission charges.
If you feel uncomfortable carrying large amounts of cash, then you can bring traveller's cheques or credit or debit card with you on your arrival.
Traveller's cheques
Between 3% and 4% commission is charged when traveller's cheques are cashed over the counter.
Cards and cash advance
Traveller's cheques and credit/debit cards are accepted, but such transactions are subject to commission. Taking out a credit/debit cash advance is less expensive in North Cyprus than in the UK, with a standard cash advance charge ranging from 3% to 4%.
